Meet this years finalists
The Decarb Next Gen Awards 2025 is designed to recognise start-ups have conceived and developed a breakthrough technology with the potential to accelerate industrial decarbonization for the hard-to-abate sectors.
Category 1 - CCUS
Carbicrete
CarbiCrete’s innovative technology revolutionizes the concrete industry by eliminating the need for cement, using steel slag as a sustainable binder, and permanently sequestering CO2 within concrete products. This dual strategy of sequestration and emission avoidance underscores CarbiCrete’s significant impact on fighting climate change and supporting the circular economy and the transition to net-zero emissions by 2050, with the scalability of its CO2 conversion process making it suitable for large-scale deployment both in Canada and globally.

Category 2 – Decarbonizing Industrial Heat and Electrification
Calix
Calix’s unique platform technology is a new type of kiln, or furnace, that delivers indirect heating of minerals to revolutionise industrial heating in heavy industries such as cement, steel, alumina and critical minerals industries, as well as the direct air capture of atmospheric carbon dioxide, and the production of sustainable environmental products. Calix’s technology enables efficient, precise, and flexible energy use in mineral processing, including from intermittent renewable sources, to reduce emissions and enhance operations. It’s hybrid fuel technology, with fast switching between electricity and combustion options, is designed to reduce costs and allow energy intensive facilities to be integrated into the grid, thereby supporting grid stabilisation through the provision of industrial demand side response services.

pH7 Technologies
pH7 Technologies enables the transition to clean and renewable energy (i.e. hydrogen) by increasing the supply of critical metals such as Copper, Platinum, Palladium, Rhodium, Radium… through an environmentally and economically sustainable process empowering the circular economy. This innovative closed-loop process applying organic, inorganic, and electrochemistry, increases the supply of critical metals through the extraction of metals from the materials destined to landfills such as mine tailings, low-grade ores, unsmeltaqble and end-of-life materials problematic for current methodologies. This disruptive process significantly reduces the wastewater, prevents hazardous chemicals from being exposed to the environment, and reduces the CO2 emissions down to zero while enabling the extraction of critical metals to empower the smooth transition to green energy.
